In a world where more and more jobs are becoming automated, you might be wondering where to begin your search for a new type of career.

It is predicted that gig economy jobs and freelancing will boom in 2025. If you are looking for a line of work that lends itself well to freelancing or the gig economy, first take a look at the pros and cons of heading down this path.

Let’s take a look at some of the jobs out there that are going to be in demand in 2025 and beyond.

These are our 10 suggestions.

Employee Relations Manager

An Employee Relations Manager plays a crucial role in maintaining a positive and productive workplace by fostering strong relationships between employees and management.

Positivity in the workplace is increasingly important for employers. And, as a result, this is a role that is increasingly in demand.

You will handle workplace conflicts, mediate disputes and address issues related to performance, behaviour in the workplace and workplace culture.

Employee Relations Managers also provide guidance on disciplinary actions and work to improve job satisfaction and staff retention at the company. They also collaborate with HR and leadership to develop programmes that enhance workplace morale and communication.

If you have a background in HR, this type of role would be perfect for you. You could also go into this area at entry level, working as an assistant to the employee relations management team so that you can build your skills and knowledge.

Strong interpersonal skills, problem solving abilities and knowledge of employment laws are essential for success in this role.

Architect

With the UK government planning more housing for the growing population, architects will be in demand. Not just for home design but for regeneration projects and the design of environmentally friendly, sustainable spaces.

An architect in the UK designs, plans and oversees the construction of buildings, ensuring they are functional, safe and aesthetically pleasing.

Architects work closely with clients to understand their needs, create detailed drawings and manage projects from concept to completion.

They also ensure compliance with UK building regulations and sustainability standards while coordinating with engineers, contractors and relevant local authorities.

As the demand for architects increases, so will the demand for architects’ assistants

So, if you would like to be in this line of work but don’t have the necessary experience and qualifications, you could look at part time entry level jobs as an assistant and build some skills and knowledge from there.

Learning & Development Specialist

We live in an increasingly fast moving world. And that is also true of the workplace with technological advances and changes in the way we work meaning employers need to make sure their teams are on top of all the changes and skills are right up to date.

If you have a relevant area of expertise and you have a passion for helping people to learn and succeed, a role as a learning & development specialist could be ideal for you.

A Learning & Development (L&D) Specialist in the UK workplace is responsible for designing, implementing and managing training programmes to enhance employee skills and performance.

L&D Specialists assess training needs, create development plans and deliver workshops or e-learning sessions. To do this, they work closely with managers to align training with company objectives and support career progression for employees.

As an L&D Specialist you will create a culture of continuous learning, help improve employee engagement and productivity and also staff retention. A rewarding role that can give you the satisfaction of seeing teams – and companies – succeed and grow.

Healthcare Practitioners

As you might expect, healthcare practitioners – whether highly qualified or entry level – are much in demand. And in 2025, roles in the mental health area are particularly in demand.

From trained psychiatric nurses to support workers to counsellors – these types of healthcare jobs are likely to be in demand for years to come. So this could be a good area to consider for your healthcare career.

Strong communication skills and empathy are essential in these roles as you will not only be supporting patients but also their families.

Psychiatric nurses work with fellow professionals such as psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers to help manage conditions like schizophrenia, depression and anxiety disorders.

Residential Care Workers & Home Helpers

There are lots of reasons why people need residential care or a helping hand in their own home. And in 2025, this line of work is still very much in demand.

You could be working with young, vulnerable people as well as older people and also those who may have illnesses or disabilities.

Whether residential or helping in the home, duties include personal care tasks such as bathing, dressing and toileting, ensuring clients maintain dignity and hygiene.

Carers also assist with mobility, medication administration, meal preparation and household chores to promote independent living.

Emotional support is a key aspect, offering companionship and encouragement to enhance well-being.

Care workers also communicate with families and healthcare professionals to ensure proper care plans are followed.

As a care worker, you will be one of the people who plays a vital role in improving clients’ quality of life, ensuring comfort, safety and dignity.

SEN Teachers & Teaching Assistants

In the UK, there is both a shortage of teaching staff and also teaching assistants. If you love to work with children and / or teenagers, you could consider becoming a teacher or a teaching assistant.

There is a particular shortage of teachers and teaching assistants who specialise in special educational needs (SEN) so this could be a good area to train in.

A teaching assistant (TA) in the UK supports teachers in delivering lessons so that all pupils are given the opportunity to reach their full potential. Their duties include assisting with classroom management, preparing learning materials and providing one-on-one or small-group support to students who need extra help.

TAs working with children with special educational needs (SEN) adapt materials and use different teaching techniques to ensure inclusion within the classroom. You would also help with behaviour management to maintain a positive learning environment.

TAs are often given training to keep up to date with the latest teaching techniques.

As well as the challenges of the job, it is also hugely rewarding. You might be asked to go along on school trips or supervise children during break times.

Programmers & Software Developers

If tech is your thing, then programmers and software developers will still be very much in demand in 2025.

As a software developer in the UK, you will be responsible for designing, coding, testing and maintaining software applications to meet business or user needs. This can be anything from creating and maintaining software systems for large companies to creating apps for individual users.

You will need to be familiar with programming languages such as Python, Java or JavaScript and you will also need to be able to communicate with other professionals in the field such as designers, analysts and – depending on the size of the company – stakeholders, to develop functional solutions.

As well as building and developing software, your job will also often involve troubleshooting and debugging software issues, ensuring systems run smoothly and securely.

Naturally, this is a fast moving environment so you will need to keep yourself up to date with all new developments so that you can offer innovative solutions so that businesses can function effectively and continue to grow in a competitive environment.

Personal Trainers

With more and more of us having a growing awareness of the importance of exercise and keeping fit – not just for weight loss, boosting muscle and cardio strength but also for boosting our positive mental health – that has led to more of a demand for qualified fitness trainers.

In the UK, personal trainers help clients achieve their fitness goals through tailored exercise programmes, motivation and expert guidance.

As a personal trainer, you could be employed by a local gym or work on a freelance basis from a gym or by visiting people’s homes, for example.

Your duties would involve assessing clients’ fitness levels, setting realistic goals for them and designing personalised workout plans. You will need experience and training and a Level 3 Diploma qualification in personal training so that you can demonstrate proper exercise techniques to ensure your clients perform movements safely and effectively to prevent injuries.

Personal trainers provide ongoing support, tracking progress and making adjustments to training routines as clients improve. They also offer more holistic advice on areas like nutrition, lifestyle changes and overall well-being to complement exercise programmes.

In addition to one-on-one coaching, personal trainers can also boost income by offering group sessions, boot camps and online training programmes.

This is ideal for those of you who are looking for the types of part time jobs that give you the opportunity to work flexible hours. The online training and coaching means you can also work from home some or all of the time.

Naturally, you will need a passion for fitness and also good people skills where you can motivate your clients to get fitter and lead a healthier and more active lifestyle.

If you are thinking of a career change or you want to train in a role where you know you will be able to find work, electricians, plumbers, construction workers and mechanics are always in demand. This will continue in 2025 as the nation faces a shortage of people with these skills.

Younger people can do an Apprenticeship to learn on the job and gain the nationally recognised qualifications needed. If you want to continue to build your expertise, there is also the possibility of moving into a relevant field of engineering from your trade.
